Leadership - keeping it real
A summary of a recent talk about leadership that I gave on a panel at the BYP Leadership Conference

It was a pleasure to speak about leadership at the recent BYP Leadership Conference. My panel was filled with excellent speakers and like all good panels we thrived off what each other had to say when speaking about what separates leaders who thrive from leaders who dive.
we spoke about the typical personal qualities that can set people apart. Qualities such as the ability to take others along with you, the ability to focus on the right problem at the right time, sometimes charisma and many other factors were offered. I agreed with everything they said, but I wanted to keep things real. We know that many get into positions because of bias and I spoke about this. Some people are promoted into leadership because of who they know or they echo the background of the existing leadership team. Life is not fair and Life is not unfair - Life is!
Once we left the stage quite a few people wanted to talk to me and my main message to them was why do you see yourself as a leader? Many couldn't really answer that question without telling me about their grand job title, the budget they had, the size of their team etc etc. I said that this was great and does indicate progress, however, if all that was to be stripped away. No grand job title, selected for redundancy, no fat salary etc etc - "Would you consider yourself a leader?". There was a pause amongst them. Most couldn't answer and a few said yes. I believe that true leadership is not about the job titles, the large budget or the size of team etc etc. It's about a mindset - a way of being. Once the leadership muscle is flexed it can be exercised in all kinds of different situations. Don't forget to flex yours. #leadership #bias #leadingbyexample #listening #problemsolving #belief #BYP
